Movies...When Did It All Go Wrong?
As a child I remember movies that took me places. Movies that were funny and original. Movies like Star Wars, Ghostbusters, and Edward Scissorhands. What do the kids of today have? Big budget, heartless, eye fodder like Transformers or the Pirates Of The Caribbean sequels that are more like two-hour commercials than pieces of art. I had George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Today's youth are stuck with hacks like Michael Bay or Jerry Bruckheimer who care more about an unnecessary action sequence than they do about the dialogue or story.
I can't sit here and condemn the worst without mentioning the few decent films for the youth of today. The Harry Potter franchise is a perfect example of said great films. Though they've had a different director for nearly all of the five films, each one is done with the story in mind before any advertising or excessive stunts.
Perhaps I'm just watching the wrong movies but I find myself, more often than not, walking out of the theatre with a sense of disappointment I feel I should come to expect. Here's to hoping for more than one film like Children Of Men each year.
